Welcome to Crimson Night - 2007/10/14 09:56 This thread discusses the Content article: Welcome to Crimson Night

well, it does look different. I like it being darker, though it's not like the content makes it feel "eviler". Mixed feelings about the artwork on the side, but that's me. Overall, nice job!

Re:Welcome to Crimson Night - 2007/10/14 11:52 I find your "evil" comment interesting since I had no objective to establish an alignment for my web page...

Overall though this design is an experiment. It's sort of a show off of "ooo look at what I know what to do with CSS now!" kinda thing. I wanted to take care of a few things with it:

  1. Emerald and Steel's insufficient contrast levels, making it hard to read at times.

  2. The need for two templates due to the gallery and forums more or less requiring a greater width than 800px. You'll note that this template actually dynamically changes width to fit the content!

  3. More prominently show artwork. A few complaints I've gotten in the past for my Joomla templates is that they did not feature my artwork as much as the old-pre Joomla machvergil sites did. I wanted to try and remedy that with this template, perhaps in a unique way.

  4. Obey the requests made a long long time ago to see the next template use red.

I like to think I succeeded in these objectives, though I know there are still kinks that have to be worked out. The experimental nature of this template means there will probably a few unforeseen bugs I'll have to fix down the road.

Oh and I wrote the random background script myself from scratch. I'm proud of that too.

Re:Welcome to Crimson Night - 2007/10/15 15:56 Okay I'm going to go ahead and hijack this into a "Crimson Night bug reports/fixes" topic, as much for my own sake as everyone else's. I really wanna see if I can make the neat tricks I'm working on in the background work so it's worth the effort to me to document this.

Issues I am aware of:

  1. Template looks like crap in IE6. I hate IE6 so much. This darn thing even works right in Windows Safari and Opera and it won't work in IE6. I hate you IE6. I wish people would finally quit using you so I didn't have to keep programing for you.

  2. In Windows Firefox, template's content area occasionally drops down to the bottom of the window, as if there isn't enough space. This is being investigated.

  3. Search tool is missing. It should be here and it's not. I'm looking into that.

  4. Template still needs to be Mac tested.

Let me know if you see anything else.

Re:Welcome to Crimson Night - 2007/10/16 22:21 Template is Mac tested. Works perfectly except that Mac Firefox has the same problem windows Firefox is.

As best my knowlege, it's a Firefox only problem. I am becoming less and less sure now it's something I can fix.

Re:Welcome to Crimson Night - 2007/10/17 21:11 Good luck fixing things. I've never had to make sure things worked in multiple browsers (let alone 2 versions of IE), but I bet it's hard as hell. You’re what keeps me believing this world’s not gone dead

Re:Welcome to Crimson Night - 2007/11/28 23:49 Template Fixes: 11/28/2007

  • Tweaks made to fix firefox problem. It is hard to tell at this point if the tweaks or the new firefox patch fixed the problem. Nevermind, Firefox glitch still present.

  • IE 6 performance improved but not fixed. Now worried IE6 might not be compatible with the template at all due to it not agreeing with the CSS properties I am using. Considering my user group and the fact that it is technically an out-of-date browser by some time now I might give up on IE 6 this time.

  • Site search restored. Might be styled differently in the future.
