If you are reading this, then you probably know that I am retireing this Mambo-based version of machvergil.com.   A new system will be going up sometime in the near future, so keep your eyes on Pardon our Dust - a machvergil transitional blog for more info.  In the mean time, feel free to poke around here all you like, I'll probably leave this site up for a while, even if it is clunky and broken.

Site stuff

Okay so firstly, my attempts to make this place run better keep seeming to be tempoary solutions that dry up after a little bit.  As such it's safe to say not much new will go on around here until I find the time to do the Joomla update (which new video games has been distracting me from), and that's assuming the Joomla update will fix it.  I'm actually contempating leaving the Joomla system as after using for this many years I've become keenly aware of some terrible limitations it has, and this site may have found the worst of these limitaions:  bad scaleability, but more on that after I have a chance to run tests to confirm this.

However, my professional site has been updated as of today, so if you are curious to see some of the stuff I've done for work lately, feel free to have a poke.  As of today I've been working for MSU's UR for a  year now, so I guess that's worth celebrating.

Confidence versus Arrogance
Written by Adam (Vergil)
Thursday, 20 March 2008

So I had an interesting discussion with my two of my co-workers at lunch today and wanted to continue the discussion to this space to see if anyone had any additional thoughts on it.  I don’t think you’ll find a person out there who does a lot of competitive activities for a living who won’t tell you confidence is important to winning.  Yet we find ourselves prone to hating people who display great amounts of arrogance in their skills.  We always are happy when see the underdog take down the arrogant favored in a match up.  These “Cinderella stories” sell tickets to sporting events and extra hours of broadcasting on ESPN all the time.

What I find interesting is that I think there is a line between portraying confidence and arrogance, and I think that line is not the same for everyone.  For some, any kind of self promotion and not displaying abject humbleness at all times, is arrogance, while others would take a look at an extreme case like Muhammad Ali and strive to be like his bad-mouthing when they go into a competition.

So what are your thoughts on it?  Feel free to go ahead and put your two cents in, or you can click the “read more” link to hear my take on it first.

Starcraft 2 Zerg Stuff
Written by Adam (Vergil)
Friday, 14 March 2008
Well starcraft2's offical site is taking it's sweet time with it, so I thought I'd make you aware of some of the material out there in case your cerebrate minds were curious as to what Blizz has in store for the swarm this time around.
  1. Firstly, The SC2 stie has opened it's Zerg Section.  There isn't much there presently, but you can read over some lore and two classic Zerg units, the Zergling and Hydralisk.
  2. There is an HD quality "reveal trailer" available on GameTrailers for your viewing pleasure.  I recommend it.  Still getting used to the Queen of Blade's new voice...
  3. GameTrailers also has more gameplay videos showing off the new units (with classic Starcraft music dubbed over it) available here and here.
  4. Gamespot has a short article on the new zerg gameplay, as well as intereviews with Game Designer Dustin Bowler, and artist Samwise.
I'm stoked at what I'm seeing.  Burrowing Ultralisks with AoE attacks?  Flying corruptor units that convert untis to your side instead when they're killed?  Infestor units that infest individual buildings?  Infested Terrans that use their guns?!  Rummored ability to infest Protoss?!  Yeah.  This is gonna be great.

Rest in Peace Gary Gygax
Written by Adam (Vergil)
Thursday, 06 March 2008
I meant to say this yesterday but didn't get to it.  Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, passed away on March 4th 2008. In my opinion every gamer, hobby, pen&paper, or video games, should honor his memory.  The ground work set up for D&D, the whole concept of numerically representing combat, character class archetypes, popularizing high fantasy in gaming, really allowed for the creation of many of the games we enjoy today.

Rest in peace Gary, you will be missed. And if you haven't yet, check out Penny Arcade's Semi-Tasteful memorial.
